Valley Flashing

The type of valley shown is an open valley where some of the flashing is ex posed to view. The open portion of the valley should be a minimum of 5 in. and the shingles should lap the flashing a minimum of 5 in. The edges of the valley should be formed with a hook edge and cleated on 2 ft centers.

Flashings are generally formed in 10 ft secfions. Sections should be lapped 8 in. in the direction of flow. The top of each section should be fastened with nails of material compatible with the flashing.

Where two equal slopes with a pitch greater than 6 in. to the foot meet at a valley, the centerline "V" may be eliminated.

Copper (minimum 16 oz), zinc alloy (minimum 0.027 in.), or painted terne (minimum .015 in. 40 lb coating) is recommended for valley flashings. Where the expected life of the roof is less than 15 years, galvanized steel (minimum 24 ga) may be used but must be painted.
